Gender and Women Empowerment Policy 2010-2020

CONTENT

The Gender and Women Empowerment Policy (2010–2020) of The Gambia was developed to promote gender equality and empower women as key contributors to national development. It aligns with international frameworks such as the Millennium Development Goals (MDGs) and other global commitments to gender equity.

Main Objective

The policy aimed to mainstream gender in all national and sectoral policies, programs, and budgets to achieve gender equity, equality, and women empowerment in The Gambia's development process.

Specific Objectives

  1. Gender Mainstreaming: Integrate gender considerations into all levels of planning, programming, and implementation.

  2. Economic Empowerment: Enhance women's access to economic resources, including land, credit, and employment opportunities.

  3. Education and Health: Improve access to quality education and healthcare services for women and girls.

  4. Legal and Human Rights: Strengthen legal frameworks to protect women's rights and address gender-based violence.

  5. Participation and Leadership: Increase women's representation in decision-making processes at all levels.

  6. Environmental and Social Inclusion: Ensure women's participation in environmental management and disaster prevention.

SUMMARY

The policy outlines strategies to address gender disparities in various sectors, including education, health, and economic empowerment. It emphasizes the importance of creating an enabling environment for women to thrive, including legal reforms, capacity building, and community engagement. Key measures include:
