Tobacco Control Policy 2013-2018

OBJECTIVE

To create awareness, build capacity, strengthen institutions, build partnership and mobilize resources for tobacco control

CONTENT

The Specific Objectives of the Policy are:

  • To reduce and subsequently prevent tobacco consumption, nicotine addiction and exposure to tobacco smoke
  • To ensure adequate and sustainable funding for tobacco control initiatives
  • To protect tobacco control policies from commercial and vested interests of tobacco industries, importers and wholesalers
  • To advocate for effective tax measures to reduce demand for tobacco
  • To protect non-smokers from exposure to tobacco smoke
  • To protect society from aggressive, misleading and deceptive marketing, promotion, sponsorship and advertisement of tobacco products by adhering to recommended packaging and labelling of tobacco products
  • To raise public awareness and strengthen community participation in tobacco control initiatives
  • To mitigate negative heath, economic and social effects of tobacco use
  • To combat illicit trade in tobacco products at national and sub-regional levels
  • To protects the health and socioeconomic wellbeing of minors from access and exposure to tobacco and its products
  • To enhance the implementation of the existing tobacco control regulations, policies and legislations
  • To promote research in tobacco and related issues Promote treatment rehabilitation and cessation programs for persons addicted to tobacco
  • To promote inter-sectoral collaboration, networking and partnership for tobacco control

  • To strengthen the implementation, monitoring and evaluation of tobacco control activities/programmes
  •  To review and update the existing legislations on tobacco control
