The Gambia National Development Plan 2018 - 2021

CONTENT

The National Development Plan (NDP) 2018–2021 of The Gambia aimed to deliver good governance, accountability, social cohesion, and national reconciliation while revitalizing and transforming the economy for the well-being of all Gambians.

Specific Objectives

  1. Good Governance: Restore respect for human rights, the rule of law, and empower citizens through decentralization.

  2. Economic Growth: Stabilize the economy, stimulate growth, and transform key sectors.

  3. Agriculture and Fisheries: Modernize these sectors to ensure food security and reduce poverty.

  4. Human Capital Development: Invest in education, healthcare, and social services to build a caring society.

  5. Infrastructure and Energy: Rebuild infrastructure and restore energy services to power the economy.

  6. Tourism: Promote inclusive, culture-centered tourism for sustainable growth.

  7. Youth Empowerment: Harness the demographic dividend by empowering youth.

  8. Private Sector Development: Position the private sector as the engine of growth and job creation.

SUMMARY

The NDP 2018–2021 was designed as a comprehensive framework to address The Gambia's socio-economic challenges and align with international commitments like the Sustainable Development Goals (SDGs) and African Union Agenda 2063. It outlined eight strategic priorities and seven critical enablers, including environmental sustainability, gender equality, and digital transformation, to complement the plan's goals.

The plan emphasized citizen participation, accountability, and partnerships with the private sector and international donors. It also included a financing strategy to mobilize resources for flagship programs and projects. The NDP envisioned a transformed Gambia with improved governance, economic stability, and enhanced quality of life for all citizens.
