THE GAMBIA'S LONG-TERM CLIMATE-NEURAL DEVELOPMENT STRATEGY 2050(LTS)

OBJECTIVE

The Gambia's Long-Term Climate-Neutral Development Strategy 2050 (LTS) aims to achieve net-zero greenhouse gas emissions by 2050 through sustainable development practices, focusing on mitigation, adaptation, and resilience to climate change while fostering socio-economic progress.

Specific Objectives:

  1. Decarbonize the Energy Sector: Promote renewable energy such as solar, wind, and hydro power while enhancing energy efficiency.

  2. Sustainable Agriculture and Land Use: Implement agro-ecology, afforestation, and forest conservation to maintain at least 30% forest cover.

  3. Manage Waste Responsibly: Introduce biogas, waste separation, recycling, and organic waste recovery to reduce emissions from waste.

  4. Resilient Infrastructure: Strengthen transport systems with fuel-efficient standards, public transit, and electric vehicles.

  5. Climate Adaptation: Build resilience in agriculture and forestry through sustainable practices and innovative technologies.

  6. Institutional Capacity: Enhance governance, capacity building, and community engagement in climate action.

  7. Funding Mobilization: Secure financial resources to support the $4 billion cost of implementing the strategy.

SUMMARY

The LTS 2050 outlines The Gambia's pathway to combating climate change by addressing key emission sectors: energy, agriculture, waste, transport, and land use. It integrates mitigation actions, such as promoting renewable energy and reducing waste emissions, with adaptation strategies to build resilience against climate risks like drought, flooding, and coastal erosion.

The strategy emphasizes community involvement, capacity building, and gender equity while aligning with international frameworks like the Paris Agreement. It provides a roadmap with short-, medium-, and long-term actions, backed by a detailed budget, to achieve sustainable economic growth, food security, and environmental protection. Ultimately, the plan ensures The Gambia contributes its fair share to global climate goals while safeguarding its citizens' livelihoods and ecosystems.
