National Forest Policy

OBJECTIVE

The National Forest Policy (2023–2032) aims to achieve sustainable forest management in The Gambia by conserving at least 30% of the country's forest cover. This objective supports socio-economic development, environmental protection, and The Gambia's obligations under international and regional conventions.

 

CONTENT

Specific Objectives:

  1. Promote sustainable forest management to enhance ecosystem services.

  2. Strengthen the institutional capacity of the Department of Forestry for efficient forest management and research.

  3. Establish robust data systems for informed forest planning and monitoring.

  4. Develop forest-based industries to improve livelihoods, particularly in rural areas.

  5. Foster transparent governance, equity, and accountability in forest management.

  6. Secure adequate funding for forestry sector development.

  7. Encourage an integrated approach involving local councils, communities, women, youth, and non-state actors.

  8. Harness indigenous knowledge and ensure inclusive participation in forest conservation.
